Dental Crowns and Bonding

Dental Crown

A dental crown can be the right choice to reproduce the appearance and function of a tooth damaged by decay or trauma.

The crown replaces the external portion of the tooth down the gums in order to help preserve the appearance of the patient’s smile and function.

Dental crowns are bonded to a tooth in order to help restore oral health and to help improve the appearance of your smile. At Metrowest Dental Care, we often recommend a dental crown to patients whose teeth don’t have enough healthy enamel to support a filling or to top off a dental implant.

What Is A Dental Crown?

dental crown Metrowest Dental CareA dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” made of porcelain that is placed over a tooth to help restore its shape, strength and size. A dental crown can be the right choice to recreate the appearance and function of a tooth damaged by decay or trauma.

The crown replaces the external portion of the tooth down the the gums in order to help preserve the appearance of the patient’s smile.

Our Ashland dental team may recommend a crown to:

  • Cover a dental implant
  • Restore a broken or worn tooth
  • Protect a tooth, weakened from decay, from breaking
  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Cover a misshapen or discolored tooth
  • Support a tooth with a large filling
  • Reinforce a tooth after being treated with root canal therapy

Cracks and decay on teeth can lead to tooth loss if not addressed quickly. The solutions will depend on the size and the location of the cavity. Dr. Alptekin, using his Fotona Erbium laser, targets only the diseased area of the tooth and helps his patients preserve more of the healthy enamel. The use of lasers also forms a microscopically favorable surface for long term retention of the restorations.

Old fillings on teeth cause cracks. If the crack lines are identified early the tooth should be treated to prevent the actual fracture of the tooth, which leads to unpredictable and lengthy treatment options

Most people are ideal candidates for a crown. This dental procedure can improve the appearance of a damaged tooth while also restoring the tooth’s natural function. After a dental crown is placed, most patients are able able to enjoy chewing without pain and be able to smile with confidence.

I was really anxious about having my first dental crown placed. Dr. Alptekin took extra time to make sure the area was completely numb and that I stayed comfortable. I had no pain during or after the procedure! I get all of my dental care at this practice and highly recommend them!MP
I can’t sing enough praises for Dr. Alptekin and his entire team! They are friendly, kind, and professional, and you can tell from the moment you walk into the office that you are in good hands and will be well taken care of. I am extremely claustrophobic and have white-knuckled my way through many years of stressful dental care. I finally gave in to the fact that I need sedation dentistry, and finding Dr. Alptekin has changed my life! I only wish I had found him sooner.Marsha Doherty

How Long Will A Dental Crown Last?

Digital technologies combined with today’s dental materials, like Zirconia, help us custom craft extremely durable and aesthetically beautiful dental crowns. While we expect them to last 10-20 years, crowns should be treated just like your natural teeth, so regular hygiene visits and checkups at our Metrowest Dental Care are important! Longevity depends on the individual’s use, habits, and food choices.

What is Bonding?

Bondings are great short-term solutions for esthetic changes on the front teeth. You can achieve your dream smile by correcting small imperfections or restoring a broken tooth. Here are some examples.
