What Are Dental Implants?

what is a dental implantDental implants are medical grade titanium posts that are placed into the jaw bone where a tooth is missing. During the healing period the jaw bone surrounds the implant tightly and forms a solid foundation for the new tooth. Then after a healing period, an abutment, or connector, is placed on top of the implant to hold and support a zirconia tooth, known as a crown. Dental Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or even the full set of teeth. Learn more about replacing all of your upper or all of your lower teeth.

People can lose an individual tooth for several reasons like accidents, infections or cracks . When that happens, implants are great options (Image 1). Implants help patients preserve the integrity of the neighboring teeth if they are healthy, unlike traditional bridge treatment (Image 2) which requires two neighboring teeth to be trimmed to provide support for the restoration.

When a patient is missing multiple teeth, or have non-salvageable teeth, on a specific side of the mouth, implant supported bridge is an ideal option (Image 3) compared to traditional partial dentures (Image 4).

What Are The Benefits Of Dental Implants?

dental implant benefits

Dental implants are comfortable, secure and will not slip – they are the closest you can get to healthy, natural teeth in both appearance and performance.

dental implants are permanent

Dental implants cannot get cavities. Normally, they serve the owner for life. An implant is equivalent to receiving a new tooth or set of teeth.

Dental Implants are effective

Dental implants replace the root structure of damaged teeth and keep the jawbone from shrinking and making your face look older. An implant is the only restorative technique that preserves and stimulates natural bone.

Missing teeth whether visible or not, causes changes in patients’ mouths, faces and chewing. When there is a gap between two teeth, the rest of the teeth start shifting, tilting and moving upward or downward trying to close the gap. All of these undesired movements cause facial changes, and negatively affect our chewing. We use our teeth and mouth daily for functions that are directly related to quality of life like speaking, eating, and socializing. A Dental Implant is the best tooth replacement method for a healthy and complete smile.

John, one of our dental implant patients, shares his story and how dental implants have improved his life.

How Long Does The Dental Implant Process Take?

Every individual has unique treatment needs, therefore time frames may vary. For example, the amount and the density of your jaw bone is one of the important factors that affects the course of treatment. If a patient needs more bone to support a implant, the dentist will add bone to the jaw. It can take three to four months for the body to produce solid bone at the desired location in the jaw. When there is enough bone to support the implant, the placement of the post completed. Then there is a three to four-month healing process. Then the abutment and crown complete the dental implant process.

How Much Does Dental Implant Treatment Cost?

We get this question asked a lot, for a good reason. If you read the answers to the previous questions, you understand implant treatment is a regenerative dentistry. When tooth/ teeth is/are GONE, the supporting bone and soft tissue of those teeth will be lost too. The clinician has to start with building the foundation first, which can vary tremendously from patient to patient. General health, medications, how long teeth have been gone, presence of abscess, infections in the jaw, all play an important role in the process. Depending on what is to be achieved, the investment for this regenerative treatment would start around $3,000 and can go up to $70,000 if the patient is suffering from complete toothlessness.
