Pinhole® Therapy For Gum Recession

Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique

Pinhole Surgical Technique BostonThe Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is a breakthrough gum recession treatment.

What Is Gum Recession?

Gum recession refers to the loss of gum tissue along the gumline. This can come with increased sensitivity to cold and to toothbrush bristles. There are various causes of gum recession. Incorrect tooth brushing habits, past orthodontics treatment, and bite-related problems may be a few of them.

Why Should Gum Recession Be Taken Seriously?

The root surfaces are made up of a porous substance that is softer and weaker than enamel. Roots of teeth are not meant to be exposed to rough conditions of the oral cavity where acids and bacteria are present. When gums recede, roots get cavities, and receded gums aesthetically look displeasing as teeth look disproportionate and longer. Healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental wellness.

What Is The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST)?

Gum graft is a common procedure that patients with gum recession are recommended by their dentists. Although it is a proven way to help with receding gums, It is a surgery that involves cutting and suturing of both the gums and the palate from where the extra tissue is harvested. If all of the teeth are affected, that would require many surgeries since only 2-3 teeth can be treated at a time. Fortunately, a more desirable procedure is available to treat receding gums, which is called Pinhole® Surgical Technique. After twenty years of clinical trials and studies, Dr. Chao innovated this procedure and started teaching his colleagues throughout the world. All of the tools and techniques used to perform the Pinhole® Surgical Technique were invented by Dr. John Chao, who trained Dr. Alptekin.

How Does The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST) Differ From Traditional Gum Grafting?

The biggest difference between Gum Grafting and Pinhole® Surgical Technique is that PST does not require the use of scalpel and stitches. The treatment is performed through ‘pinhole’ sized incisions with the help of specially designed instruments. This technique makes the healing process much more comfortable than a gum graft since the roof of the mouth and gums are not cut open.

While traditional grafting treatment is effective, comparable results with better patient experience can be achieved through the Pinhole® Surgical Technique.

How is Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST) Performed?

During the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue.

What Are The Benefits of Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST)?

The benefits of the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique are many:

  • Less discomfort for the patient after treatment
  • Faster recovery for the patient than traditional grafting
  • No need for uncomfortable sutures
  • No need for scalpels or invasive surgical tools
  • No need to take donor tissue from the patient’s palate
  • Excellent, natural-looking, long-lasting results

Does Pinhole technique work for everyone?

The success of the procedure depends on several factors like the general health of the patient; and the cause, type, and severity of the recession. Once Dr. Alptekin evaluates he discusses the possible outcomes with the patient.

What is Dr. Alptekin's Experience with Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST)?

Dr. Alptekin received his training directly from Dr. Chao in 2017. He is one of the few practitioners in the Metrowest area who is certified to perform PST. He also receives referrals from his colleagues whose patients suffer from receding gums.

Dr. Alptekin (Dr. Sal) along with his very competent dental team performed successful pinhole surgery, replaced old caps, and restored teeth with old fillings. It was a long journey for one with anxiety connected to the dental chair...avoided it for as long as possible. In my first meeting with Dr Sal, he took the time to review the dental care I was in need of, to explain each potential procedure, provide alternatives when there was one and the pros/cons of each. He was a partner to the finish line which included calling me on a Saturday after surgery, while he was away with family to check in. I highly recommend, Dr. Sal, each of his dental assistants, dental hygienists, and administrative team and appreciate the part they all played in my journey..I have a lot to smile about ! Happy to do so now with a smile I am proud of!
